What Lafayette refers to as their "COMPOSER", or "M" (2-2-4) formats are simple and inexpensive electronic solutions that add or extract rear "ambience" or "reverberation" sound channels from regular 2 channel, left / right stereo sound sources, then sent to a separate stereo amplifier and set of speakers (usually small bookshelf size), that are normally placed behind the listener. The front, main speakers are set to the proper volume level, then the user mixes the sound of the rear speakers to the correct level to "enhance" the listening environment. NOTE: If you were to listen to only the rear speakers in isolation, the program material would sound like reverb and phase shifting effects. SQ Quadraphonic was a matrix 4-channel embedded quadraphonic sound system for vinyl LP records. It was introduced by CBS Records in 1971.
Many recordings using this technology were released on LP during the 1970s. SQ Quadraphonic can also be broadcast on a FM radio signal using a sub-carrier, then decoded at the listeners location.
